The US Open begins in two weeks, with several top players facing injury setbacks. Emma Raducanu and Sebastian Korda have already withdrawn, and more could follow.
Defending champion in doubt
Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time US Open champion, has not played since April due to a wrist injury picked up at the Barcelona Open. He missed the French Open and Wimbledon, and withdrew from the Cincinnati Open a week before it started. He has been training in Murcia but faces a tough return to best-of-five-set matches after four months away.
Sinner's knee issue
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner skipped the Canadian Open to rest after Wimbledon, then visited medical clinics in Italy after feeling knee discomfort. He withdrew from Cincinnati, saying: “My right knee has been bothering me, and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I'm not ready to compete yet.” He is believed to be ready for the US Open, but his status is unclear.
Other contenders
Holger Rune has been sidelined since October 2025 with a torn Achilles tendon, and despite targeting a May comeback, has not returned. He said on Andy Roddick's podcast he could play Denmark's Davis Cup tie on September 18, after the US Open. He tweeted: “I see conclusions on me withdrawing from UsOpen. I did not withdraw. I am working super hard everyday and as soon as I am ready, I am ready. I hope it will be UsOpen.”
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has not played since Umag in July and withdrew from Canada and Cincinnati, reportedly with a back injury. Corentin Moutet withdrew from Cincinnati, citing a wrist injury since November. He wrote: “Living with pain every day has become too hard. That’s why I’ve made the difficult decision to take some time off.”
Karolina Muchova, runner-up at Wimbledon, has not played since, missing Canada and Cincinnati after a “small surgery”. She has returned to practice and hopes to compete. Jasmine Paolini, who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals, has missed Toronto and Cincinnati with a foot injury. Jaqueline Cristian, who had knee surgery last month, said: “Recovery starts now. I’ll see you back on court very soon.”
