Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has backed only two clubs to challenge for the Premier League title this season, with Manchester City named as the Gunners' main rivals.
Arsenal's Title Defence
Mikel Arteta's side ended a 22-year wait for the league title last season, finishing top after three consecutive second-place finishes. Over the summer, Arsenal have strengthened with the signings of Christos Tzolis, Illan Meslier, and marquee arrival Bruno Guimaraes, while still seeking additions in defence and wide forward areas before the deadline.
Meanwhile, several of Arsenal's rivals have undergone managerial changes. Enzo Maresca has returned to Manchester City, while Andoni Iraola and Xabi Alonso have taken charge at Liverpool and Chelsea respectively. Michael Carrick is set for his first full season at Manchester United after arriving midway through last season.
Smith's Prediction
Despite the upheaval, Smith told Metro via BestBettingSites.co.uk: 'I think Man City are the key challenger [to Arsenal]. Obviously, they have a new manager, so that puts a little question mark in there about how Maresca can settle with his players, but I still see them being the only challenger. There's a whole host of others just below that, but I'd say it's [between Arsenal and] City at the moment.'
City have seen several key players depart, including John Stones, Bernardo Silva, and Nathan Ake, with Rodri also poised to leave for Barcelona. Smith believes these departures could give Arsenal the edge, adding: 'I've got to go for Arsenal winning it again; let's hope.'
Predicted Top Six
Smith's predicted top six: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Aston Villa. He said: 'Then City. Manchester United, they finished third last year, and I think they're going to be better off this year. Carrick is getting his feet under the table, so maybe Man United third, Liverpool fourth, and Chelsea perhaps having a much better season than they did last time under Alonso. They have made some good signings, so I'd see that as the top five, then that sixth spot I'd say Aston Villa are favourites.'
Arsenal and City meet in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff this weekend. Arsenal begin their league campaign against newly promoted Coventry City on Friday, while City host Bournemouth in Maresca's first league game.
