WorkSafe Victoria is set to investigate Carlton and the AFL over their management of Elijah Hollands’ public mental health episode during a match. The 23-year-old Blues player was hospitalised on Monday night after displaying erratic behaviour in Carlton’s loss to Collingwood at the MCG last Thursday.
Hollands, who recorded just one ineffective disposal, was seen appearing confused in videos circulated online. WorkSafe will assess whether the club and league breached occupational health and safety laws by allowing him to play. “WorkSafe is assessing the matter to determine whether any action is required under the occupational health and safety act,” a spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Carlton has confirmed Hollands is receiving medical support. His father posted an emotional message vowing to “lift him up until he is restored in full”. The club requested privacy, urging media not to report on his location or health details.
Hollands had previously taken personal leave for mental health and alcohol issues. Carlton football boss Brad Wright ruled out alcohol or illicit substances as factors, stating: “We’re dealing with a mental health issue.” The incident has sparked calls for a league-wide mental health round from players including Bailey Smith, Jack Ginnivan, and Rory Lobb.
Coaches Luke Beveridge and Dean Cox highlighted increased scrutiny on players. “What our players are exposed to… is a lot more challenging than it ever has been,” Beveridge said. Cox noted pressure has “skyrocketed” due to social media.
Hollands, who turns 24 on Saturday, was delisted by Carlton last season but re-earned his spot and has played all six games this year. Support services are available for those in need.
