Thomas Tuchel has offered clues about his starting line-up for England's World Cup opener against Croatia following the release of squad numbers. The head coach had already raised eyebrows with his squad announcement, leaving out Harry Maguire, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer while selecting John Stones, Jordan Henderson and Ivan Toney.
Of course, the assigned numbers do not confirm the starting XI for the June 17 showdown in Dallas. Much could depend on performances in pre-tournament friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica. However, they provide insight into Tuchel's thinking and which players he favours. Declan Rice and Harry Kane, for example, were not given No.4 and No.9 by accident — they will start.
Watkins Second Choice
Ollie Watkins has been given the No.19 shirt, indicating he is the primary backup to Harry Kane. Ivan Toney, a surprise selection, wears No.23. Marcus Rashford (No.11) can also play through the middle, but Watkins' strong end to the season and big-game experience make him the go-to option should Kane be unavailable.
Konsa Likely Starter
Ezri Konsa has been handed the No.2 shirt, but he is unlikely to play at right-back. Instead, he is expected to partner Marc Guehi in central defence. Konsa's consistency, recovery speed and versatility have made him a first-choice option under Tuchel.
Stones in Contention
John Stones, a surprise pick after a season with limited starts, has been given the No.5 shirt. This suggests he is next in line behind Konsa and Guehi, or could even start ahead of Konsa. Stones brings calmness on the ball and tournament experience, despite an injury-hit season.
Bellingham vs Rogers
One of Tuchel's most intriguing decisions is who will play the No.10 role. Jude Bellingham, wearing No.10, appears to have the edge over Morgan Rogers (No.17). Bellingham has been a regular starter but faces pressure from Rogers, who now has 13 caps. The competition should bring out the best in both players.
Rashford Over Gordon
Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon are rivals at both club and international level. Rashford has been given the No.11 shirt, indicating he is the preferred option on the left flank. Gordon will wear No.18. Rashford's loan at Barcelona has cast doubt on his future, but for England, he has the edge.
