Man Utd Players to Trigger Wage Hikes Despite Carrick Warning

Manchester United have secured their return to the Champions League next season, a development that significantly boosts the club's finances but also triggers substantial wage increases for many players. The Red Devils' 3-2 victory over Liverpool ensured a top-five finish in the Premier League, with Michael Carrick's side currently sitting third on 64 points with three matches remaining.

Champions League Qualification and Financial Implications

Returning to Europe's elite club competition was the primary objective for interim manager Michael Carrick, who took charge in January. The qualification is crucial for the club's financial outlook, as UEFA pays each participating team approximately £16.1 million just for entering the league phase, with an additional £1.8 million per win. Further payments are made as the competition progresses, alongside enhanced commercial opportunities and the ability to attract higher-calibre players.

United's absence from European football this season, following a 15th-place finish under Ruben Amorim, proved costly. The club recorded a net loss of £6.6 million for the first financial quarter in December, attributed to diminished broadcasting revenue and ticket sales. However, the return to the Champions League will also increase the wage bill, as many first-team squad members have contract clauses linked to the competition.

Player Wage Increases

It is understood that the majority of the squad will see their wages rise by 25 per cent next season. According to reports, captain Bruno Fernandes will see his weekly salary jump to £250,000, while Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana would also receive increases if they are not sold this summer. United are hoping to offload Rashford permanently to Barcelona, where he is currently on loan, and find a buyer for Onana, who has spent this season with Trabzonspor in Turkey. The club has already confirmed that Rasmus Hojlund will leave the wage bill after Napoli triggered their option to buy him.

Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire are among players who have recently signed new contracts with performance-related clauses, which will now increase due to Champions League participation.

Carrick's Warning

Despite the financial windfall, Carrick has cautioned his players against over-celebrating their achievement. "The Champions League is one thing, but it's not something that we should be over-celebrating either," he said. "We want to be finishing high up the league really and we want to be challenging high up in the league and trying to get more points so our season doesn't get to a close when that happens."

With a top-five finish assured, United will now aim to reduce the gap to rivals Manchester City in second place. They conclude the campaign with matches against Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton. Carrick's future as full-time manager remains uncertain, but his focus remains on finishing the season strongly.
