Pizzo Meriggio Avalanche Tragedy: One Dead in Major Alpine Rescue Operation

A devastating off-piste skiing accident has unfolded in the Italian Alps, resulting in one fatality and leaving two others injured, one critically. The incident occurred near Pizzo Meriggio, within the municipality of Albosaggia in the province of Sondrio, sparking an extensive and complex emergency response.

Emergency Response Mobilised Amid Harsh Conditions

The alarm was raised following the serious mountain accident, which involved three skiers who had ventured away from marked slopes. Rescuers faced challenging weather and terrain as they launched a major operation to reach the group. Three helicopters were immediately scrambled to the scene: one from the Regional Health Service, another from the Guardia di Finanza, and a third from the Fire Brigade.

Medical teams were airlifted into the area, where they quickly located two of the skiers. Tragically, one individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The second skier was stabilised by responders but remains in a critical condition, fighting for their life.

Specialist Unit Recovers Buried Skier

The third member of the skiing party was later discovered buried beneath the snow. They were successfully extracted by the Fire Brigade's specialist SAF unit (Speleo Alpino Fluviali). Personnel from this unit were flown into the mountainous area aboard a Drago 150 helicopter, which is currently stationed in Livigno during the Olympic period.

The rescue operation highlighted the severe risks associated with off-piste skiing in alpine regions, particularly under adverse conditions.

Location and Terrain of the Incident

Pizzo Meriggio is situated in the central Orobie Alps of Valtellina, directly opposite the entrance to Valmalenco. The area is accessible via several trails and is characterised by its broadleaf woodland, with forests beginning at approximately 1,200 metres above sea level.

Albosaggia, the local municipality, is located in the northern Italian province of Sondrio, a region renowned for its skiing but also known for the potential dangers of its unmarked mountain terrain.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the inherent hazards present in alpine environments, especially when skiers deviate from established and monitored slopes. The community and authorities are now reflecting on the incident as the investigation into the precise circumstances continues.
