Mountaineer Allie Pepper met Mikel Sherpa at Manaslu base camp in Nepal in September 2022. Their romance began with stolen kisses and whispered conversations, hidden from the rest of the camp. Pepper, who was newly separated from her husband, had thrown herself into her dream of climbing the world's 14 highest peaks without supplemental oxygen.
Mikel, a guide at base camp, kept stealing Pepper's umbrella and teasing her during days of rain that prevented any climbing. One night, watching Nepali music clips on his phone in the dining tent, they kissed. Later, he slipped into her tent before dawn so no one would know. For a while, their relationship remained a secret—tender but complicated, with a 15-year age gap and Pepper's recent separation.
The following year, when Pepper was in Pakistan preparing to climb K2, Mikel met her at the airport. They decided to share a room openly, marking the moment they stopped hiding. 'That was the moment we decided not to hide any more. We were simply together and everyone knew,' Pepper said.
Since then, the couple has climbed seven 8,000-metre peaks together. Mikel supports Pepper's dream by carrying heavy loads, making hard decisions, and guiding her calmly. 'Nothing feels too hard for us, not even scaling the highest peaks on Earth,' Pepper said. Their motto: 'I love me, you love you, we love each other, and we both love the mountain.'
