Bukayo Saka has described Jarell Quansah's two-match suspension from the World Cup as 'incredibly frustrating' for the England squad. The defender was sent off during England's last-16 victory over Mexico, and FIFA confirmed on Thursday that he will miss the quarter-final against Norway and a potential semi-final.
Saka's Reaction to the Ban
Speaking to reporters at England's training base in Kansas City, Saka said: 'Yeah, I just found out that it's a two match ban which is incredibly frustrating for him and us. But yeah it is what it is, we're not here to complain we'll just have to adapt and pick a team that can beat Norway.'
The Arsenal winger's comments reflect the mood in the England camp, where the ban has been met with disappointment but also a determination to move forward without Quansah.
Tuchel's Fury Over FIFA Decision
The decision of FIFA's disciplinary committee to impose a two-game ban is said to have left England manager Thomas Tuchel furious. According to sources close to the camp, Tuchel is particularly annoyed that referee Alireza Faghan was shown a still image of Quansah's studs on Mexico's Jesus Gallardo upon his arrival at the VAR pitch-side monitor. Tuchel believes the still image did not provide the full context of the challenge, which he considers to be accidental rather than malicious.
Quansah was shown a straight red card in the 67th minute of the match for a high challenge on Gallardo. England went on to win the game 2-1, but the loss of Quansah for the next two matches is a significant blow to Tuchel's defensive options.
Impact on England's World Cup Campaign
Quansah's suspension means he will miss the quarter-final clash against Norway, who advanced after a 3-0 win over South Korea. If England progress, he would also be unavailable for the semi-final. The 23-year-old Liverpool defender has been a key part of England's defence in the tournament, starting all four matches so far.
Tuchel will now have to reshuffle his backline, with options including John Stones, Harry Maguire, and Marc Guehi. The England boss is expected to name his starting XI for the Norway match in the coming days.
