Ugandan rugby player Hamza Muhaise has died at the age of 25 after collapsing following a training session. The fly-half, who played for Kenyan side Strathmore Leos, was training with the club on Wednesday when he was taken ill. While an ambulance was reportedly called, he tragically passed away.
Career and Tributes
According to reports from Kenya, Muhaise joined the Leos having previously represented top Ugandan side Black Pirates. Tributes have poured in from across the rugby world, with moments of silence set to be held ahead of fixtures across Uganda and Kenya this weekend.
Muhaise's death was confirmed by the Leos in a statement, which read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother Hamza. His loss has left a deep void in our hearts. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Mourning Across Rugby Community
Uganda Rugby issued a statement extending condolences, noting Muhaise was a former Sailors RFC player who later represented Strathmore Leos in Kenya. The statement added: “In honor of Hamza’s memory, a moment of silence will be conducted before kickoff of the U20 Test Match between Uganda and Zimbabwe happening this Saturday at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.”
The Kenyan Rugby Union also expressed condolences, stating: “The Kenya Rugby Union extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Hamza Muhaise following his untimely passing yesterday after a training session with Strathmore Leos. In honour of Hamza and his contribution to the rugby family, all round one matches at the Kabeberi7s across Division One, Division Two and the Ladies category will observe a minute of silence before kick off.”
Former Club Mourns
Muhaise's former club Pirates said there was a “sombre mood at sea,” adding: “We join @strathleos27 in mourning one of our former player Hamza Muhaise who passed away last evening. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Sail on you Pirate …”
Tragically, Muhaise is the second Strathmore Leos player to pass away this year, following the death of Felix Ouma in January.
