Mexico legend Guillermo Ochoa broke down in tears on the bench and announced his immediate retirement from football after England's dramatic 3-2 victory at the Azteca Stadium in the World Cup round of 16.
Emotional Farewell at the Azteca
Ochoa, who turned 41 on July 13, had pledged before the tournament that he would retire once Mexico's campaign ended. After the final whistle, he was lifted aloft by his teammates and bid farewell to supporters alongside his family. He told reporters: "My first game, Azteca. My last game, Azteca. It's been a beautiful final chapter of my career. Thank you, everyone."
Distinguished Career Spanning 23 Years
Ochoa retires with 153 international caps, including 12 appearances at World Cup finals across six tournaments from 2006 to 2026. He made over 425 appearances for Club America across two stints and played for European clubs including AC Ajaccio, Malaga, Granada, Standard Liege, Salernitana, AVS, and AEL Limassol.
Final World Cup Campaign
Although he lost his starting spot to Raul Rangel, Ochoa remained a key figure in the squad. Manager Javier Aguirre gave him a farewell appearance in the final group match against Czechia, where Ochoa came on as a 77th-minute substitute in a 3-0 win. However, Mexico could not progress further, falling to England in the last 16.
England's Resilient Victory
England, coached by Thomas Tuchel, took control early when Jude Bellingham scored a brace in the first half. Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico before halftime. In the second half, Jarell Quansah received a straight red card, but Harry Kane converted a penalty on the hour mark. Mexico also earned a penalty after Kane was adjudged to have kicked an opponent inside the area, and Raul Jimenez scored to make it 3-2. Despite late pressure, Mexico could not find an equalizer.
The defeat marked Mexico's third loss in 90 matches at the Azteca and their first-ever World Cup defeat at the venue. England will face Norway in the quarter-finals after Norway shocked Brazil with an Erling Haaland brace.
