England defender Ezri Konsa has issued a defiant message ahead of the World Cup Round of 16 clash against Mexico, insisting the Three Lions can overcome the altitude at the Estadio Azteca and stop the co-hosts' potent attack.
Konsa Backs England's Defence
Konsa, who started in England's 2-1 win over DR Congo, believes the team's backline has enough pace and strength to nullify Mexico's forward line, which has scored eight goals in four matches without conceding. "Yes, definitely we'll be ready. We've got enough at the back to stop a counter," Konsa said. "We've got good pace, we've got good strength at the back. Look, they're doing well, but we're here to make an upset and win the game on Sunday."
Partnership with Marc Guehi
The Aston Villa centre-back highlighted his partnership with Marc Guehi, noting their growing chemistry. "I've got a great relationship with Marc at the back and whoever I play with I enjoy each moment," he added. Konsa acknowledged defensive improvements after the Panama game, where England were exposed, but praised the clean sheet against DR Congo despite a first-half chance that hit the post.
Harry Kane's Goal-Scoring Prowess
Konsa also pointed to England's attacking firepower, led by captain Harry Kane, who scored twice against DR Congo to take his World Cup tally to 13 goals, surpassing Pele's 12. Kane's 86th-minute winner was his 20th goal in major tournaments. "Of course, it's like Argentina with Messi and we've got that in Harry Kane here," Konsa said. "We know his qualities. We know how many games he can score in. That's his job. That's what he does."
Altitude Concerns Addressed
The match at the Azteca, situated 2,240 metres above sea level, presents a unique challenge. England manager Thomas Tuchel described the altitude as a clear disadvantage, but Konsa remains confident. "We've done some work on that and we'll be ready for Sunday's game," he said. "They're playing at home in front of their crowd. We know how difficult it is going to be with their fans behind them. But, like I said, we're going to be ready and we're there to make an upset."
Preparation and Confidence
Some England players have installed hyperbaric chambers at home for oxygen therapy, but Konsa has not. "Each to their own. Everyone is different. Everyone handles heat differently," he explained. "We've done that here, we've worked on it before, and we'll be fine. We'll go to the game full of confidence and we'll be ready."
