Kevin Keegan, the former Liverpool and Newcastle United player and manager, has died at the age of 75 following a battle with stage four cancer. His close friend Peter Graves confirmed the news, revealing that Keegan was surrounded by his wife Jean and their daughters Laura Jane and Sarah Marie in his final moments.
Final public appearance
Keegan remained active in the final months of his life, making several public appearances after his diagnosis. His last public outing saw him witness an England performance alongside Ray Parlour, David James and Sam Allardyce. In an Instagram post, Graves noted that Keegan was a big fan of "Tuchel Ball".
Earlier in June, Keegan publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis for the first time, displaying his trademark wit. Speaking alongside Graves at the Tyne Theatre, he recounted a conversation regarding his treatment: "I was in a car accident and, through that, I had to have an operation. Whilst having the scan for the operation, they found out I had cancer."
Tributes from football legends
Alan Shearer posted on social media: "My Hero. My manager. My friend. Sleep easy Boss." Jamie Carragher tweeted: "RIP Kevin Keegan. One of the greatest players this country has ever produced, trophies and goals galore, double Ballon d'Or winner shows he was an absolute giant of the English game. One of the most important men in making LFC what it is today."
Newcastle United paid an extensive, emotional tribute, stating: "Kevin was more than a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters." The club added: "Today, we mourn the loss of a true giant of our history, and at the appropriate moment, we will carefully consider how we shape a lasting tribute to Kevin's remarkable life and legacy. Rest in peace, King Kev."
Keegan will be celebrated by both Liverpool and Newcastle today as the two teams meet on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season at St James' Park. He is survived by his wife, Jean, and their daughters, Laura Jane and Sarah Marie.
