Erling Haaland faced scathing criticism from Norwegian media after failing to make an impact in Norway's 2-1 extra-time defeat to England in the World Cup quarter-finals. The Manchester City striker, who had scored seven goals in the tournament, was largely kept quiet by England's defence and was substituted during extra time.
Match Overview
Thomas Tuchel's England advanced to their fourth World Cup semi-final after a tense encounter in Miami. Norway took the lead through Andreas Schjelderup in the 36th minute, but Jude Bellingham equalised in first-half stoppage time. With no further goals in normal time, Bellingham struck again in the third minute of extra time to secure a 2-1 victory.
Haaland, 25, was expected to be a major threat but barely had a sight of goal. He was substituted before the final 15 minutes of extra time, having run himself into the ground according to some reports.
Norwegian Media Verdict
Norwegian publication Dagbladet awarded Haaland a brutal 4/10 rating, among the lowest in the team. Their verdict stated: "He had a few opportunities but failed to capitalise on them. It turned out to be a disappointing quarter-final. His body language was off." Only Alexander Sorloth and goalkeeper Orjan Nyland received lower scores, both with 3/10.
Digital outlet Nettavisen also gave Haaland a 4/10 based on fan ratings, though their own journalist rated him 6/10 for his energetic pressing. The report noted: "He was not heavily involved before the break, but immense in the pressing game. He surged forward with such pace and power just before half-time that former team-mate John Stones could do nothing but spill the ball out of play."
Haaland had a golden opportunity from a cross before half-time, but his finish was saved by Jordan Pickford. He also saw a goal disallowed after a soft foul in the box. Despite his efforts, the forward was unable to make the decisive contribution Norway needed.
Goalkeeper and Striker Criticism
Nyland also faced harsh words from Dagbladet: "The goalkeeper started well, but then the blunders came. First, a shocking clearance, then the rebound that put England 2–1 up. Terrible, coming after a good World Cup." Sorloth, meanwhile, was described as "painful to see such a good striker unable to make it work."
England's victory sets up a semi-final clash, while Norway's World Cup dream ended in disappointment. Haaland's performance will be a talking point as the tournament continues.
