Harry Kane saved the day for England as Thomas Tuchel's side narrowly avoided a humiliating round-of-32 exit to DR Congo in the World Cup. The Three Lions fell behind after just seven minutes when the African side took advantage of defensive disarray. Djed Spence was caught out of position, leaving the defence exposed, and DR Congo capitalised to take a shock lead.
First-half struggles
England grew into the contest as the half progressed but were fortunate not to be 2-0 down when Yoane Wissa hit the post from six yards. Tensions flared when Kane went down under a challenge from goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, but the referee waved away penalty appeals, and VAR upheld the decision. Despite mounting pressure, England failed to find an equaliser before the break.
Jordan Pickford, one of England's finest-ever goalkeepers, will not want to see the opener again. He was rated 5/10, with the goal being a significant blemish on what may be his final World Cup appearance. Djed Spence also received a 5/10 after a poor first half, though he settled slightly before becoming anonymous in the second half.
Second-half rescue
England looked sluggish after the restart until a hydration break seemed to spark a revival. Shortly after, Kane latched onto Anthony Gordon's pinpoint cross to slot home the equaliser. The captain then produced a thunderous finish in the dying embers to secure victory, earning a 9/10 rating despite an otherwise quiet performance.
Declan Rice was a standout, rated 8/10. While his set-piece deliveries were inconsistent, his switch to right-back under Tuchel's tactical adjustment allowed him to influence the game more. Jude Bellingham (6/10) came close to scoring but was denied by Mpasi's outstretched palm.
Disappointing performances
Marcus Rashford received a 4/10, described as a shell of the player who dazzled for Barcelona this season. His runs were positive, but his execution was poor. Noni Madueke also scored 4/10, having slowed play and run into trouble despite having the most touches among England attackers before being substituted.
Substitutes made a significant impact. Anthony Gordon, who felt aggrieved to be dropped, earned a 9/10 after a super positive display, providing the cross for Kane's equaliser and working hard at both ends. Bukayo Saka (7/10) and Eberechi Eze (6/10) also contributed, while John Stones had no time to make an impact.
