DR Congo Hero Wissa Nearly Lost Sight in Acid Attack

Wissa's Heroics Propel DR Congo to Historic Knockout Stage

Yoane Wissa has been DR Congo's standout player at the 2026 World Cup, leading his team to a historic round of 32 clash against England. The Newcastle United forward scored the equaliser against Portugal and a brace against Uzbekistan to secure DR Congo's first-ever knockout stage appearance since 1974, when the nation was known as Zaire.

Acid Attack Nearly Ended His Career and Sight

Wissa's journey to the global stage was nearly derailed by a horrific acid attack in July 2021. While playing for FC Lorient in France, a woman approached his home requesting an autograph. Later that evening, she returned and threw a highly corrosive substance into his face and eyes, while also attempting to abduct his newborn daughter. Wissa prevented the abduction but suffered severe chemical burns.

Emergency surgery on both eyes saved him from permanent blindness. Doctors warned he would need eye drops for the rest of his life. Remarkably, he completed an £8.5 million move to Brentford just one month after the attack.

Psychological Aftermath and Court Testimony

The attacker, identified as Laetitia P., was convicted of the assault and an earlier acid attack on another woman in a bid to steal a child. She received an 18-year prison sentence. Wissa testified in court in January 2025, describing the lasting trauma: 'It has been a nightmare. Since then, I panic every time I hear a noise, and the only thing that kept me going was knowing my children are safe.'

He added: 'I had surgery on both eyes and the doctor told me I will need to use eye drops for the rest of my life. It took me six months before I fully got my sight back. Had I not been treated so quickly, the consequences would have been far worse.'

Wissa's wife Kahina also suffered depression, and the couple sought psychological help. Wissa refused cosmetic surgery, saying the scars are part of his personal history.

From Trauma to Triumph at World Cup 2026

Wissa joined Newcastle United for £55 million in 2025 and has carried his club form into the World Cup. DR Congo finished third in Group K with four points, beating Uzbekistan 3-1 in the decisive match. They now face England in the round of 32, a team coached by Thomas Tuchel.

Wissa's resilience has made him a national hero. His ability to overcome such a traumatic event and perform on the biggest stage underscores his remarkable character and talent.
