The Queensway (Birkenhead) Mersey Tunnel will be closed for a full day on Sunday, July 5, to accommodate the annual Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool (LCL) Bike Ride. The tunnel will shut in both directions from 5am to 4.30pm, allowing cyclists to ride through the tunnel traffic-free.
Tunnel Closure Details
Merseytravel confirmed the closure, stating: "Please allow additional time to complete your journey." The Kingsway Mersey Tunnel will remain open as an alternative route. Liverpool City Council added that there will be a lane closure on Old Haymarket to support the Queensway Tunnel closure. The tunnel will reopen to traffic from Liverpool to Birkenhead at 1pm on the day, and to all traffic at 4pm.
LCL Bike Ride Overview

It is a non-competitive event that allows participants to explore scenic landscapes across Liverpool, Wirral, and Chester. Cyclists from across Liverpool and the North West are expected to take part.
