The 2026 World Cup is underway across the US, Canada and Mexico, with the BBC and ITV sharing live free-to-air coverage in the UK. Both broadcasters have assembled star-studded teams of presenters, pundits and commentators, though their production strategies differ significantly.
BBC opts for Salford studio
The BBC has chosen to base its coverage from its immersive studio in Salford until the latter knockout stages, rather than sending a full team to North America. The decision was made for financial and environmental reasons, aiming to minimise costs for the expanded 48-team tournament and reduce the corporation's carbon footprint.
Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott lead the presenting line-up. This is the first men's World Cup since 2002 without Gary Lineker on BBC presenting duties, after Cates, Chapman and Logan replaced him as co-hosts of Match of the Day last year. Gabby Logan is expected to present the final, becoming the first woman to host the BBC's coverage of a men's World Cup final.
Punditry firepower
The BBC's punditry team includes Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Micah Richards, alongside England legends Joe Hart, Steph Houghton and Ellen White. International perspectives come from Olivier Giroud, Gael Clichy and Cesar Azpilicueta. Former Brentford and Tottenham manager Thomas Frank also provides tactical analysis. Darren Cann serves as the referee analyst.
Guy Mowbray is the lead commentator, handling England matches with Shearer as co-commentator. Other BBC commentators include Steve Wilson, Steve Bower, Jonathan Pearce, Robyn Cowen, Steven Wyeth, Liam McLeod, Danny Murphy, Stephen Warnock, Efan Ekoku, Martin Keown, Sue Smith, Rachel Corsie, James McFadden and Paul Robinson.
ITV broadcasts from Brooklyn
ITV has taken a different approach, basing its studio in Brooklyn, New York, with views of the Manhattan skyline and Brooklyn Bridge. Mark Pougatch and Laura Woods present the coverage.
The punditry line-up features Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Gary Neville, Patrick Vieira and Karen Carney. Former Tottenham and Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou and current US Women's manager Emma Hayes offer coaching perspectives. Juan Mata, Duncan Ferguson, Jobi McAnuff, Bradley Wright-Phillips and referee analyst Christina Unkel also contribute.
Sam Matterface leads the commentary team, calling England games with Lee Dixon as co-commentator. Other commentators include Jon Champion, Seb Hutchinson, Joe Speight, Ally McCoist, Andros Townsend and Lucy Ward.
England's Round of 16 clash
England face Mexico in the Round of 16 on Monday morning, with kick-off scheduled for the early hours. Both broadcasters will provide live coverage of the match. According to Metro, the BBC has confirmed Mowbray and Shearer will be on commentary duty for the England game.
