Spain won with an extra-time goal from Barcelona's Ferran Torres at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night.
The final whistle sparked a heated exchange between Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes and Spain players. Paredes kicked Eric Garcia to the ground, grabbed him by the throat, and pushed Gavi to the floor seconds later, earning a red card. Nahuel Molina appeared to strike Rodri as the Spain star celebrated, while Argentina coach Roberto Ayala allegedly punched Dani Olmo before Garcia intervened.
FIFA Investigation Launched
FIFA is investigating the behaviour of Argentina players and staff after the match, with potential bans and fines looming. The incidents occurred after Spain's victory, which ended Argentina's hopes of back-to-back World Cup titles.
Enzo Fernandez, who was sent off before the end of regulation time, wrote on social media: "As time passes, you realize there is something much bigger than a result. For years, this group has represented our country in the best possible way." He thanked fans for their support but did not mention the altercations.
De Paul Hits Back at Conspiracy Theories
Rodrigo De Paul took aim at claims that Argentina received preferential treatment from referees and FIFA during the tournament. He wrote on Instagram: "The deepest pain comes from not being able to bring the World Cup trophy back to our country once again... Today, I look at how many people were waiting for this fall, spreading baseless conspiracy theories throughout the World Cup just to soothe their own pain."
Lionel Messi, who scored eight goals in the tournament, posted: "The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal. But I also hold onto all the good things... Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and message." He also congratulated Spain on their victory.
Romero and Otamendi Express Heartbreak
Tottenham Hotspur's Cristian Romero wrote: "And this time, it wasn't meant to be... We gave it our all. We finished second, but we never stopped representing Argentina with the pride and dedication this jersey deserves." He urged the team to "rise again."
Nicolas Otamendi, involved in post-match scenes with Rodri, said: "It wasn't the ending we dreamed of. And the truth is, it hurts deeply... But if there is one thing I will carry with me forever, it is the pride of having shared this journey with a group of extraordinary people."
Martinez and Tagliafico Also Speak
Lautaro Martinez, who scored the semi-final winner against England, stated: "We gave it our all; for the second World Cup in a row, we reached the final, but this time it just wasn't meant to be." Nicolas Tagliafico added: "It hurts a lot, I won't deny it. But having reached another final and giving everything on the court can't be erased by anything."
No public apology has been issued for the post-match behaviour. Paredes' mother defended him at Ezeiza airport, saying: "We never disrespect anyone. Respect always... I know what the Argentine National Team means to my son."
