Thelo Aasgaard has become the first Rangers player to score at a World Cup in 28 years, ending the drought with a stunning goal for Norway against France. The 24-year-old midfielder, who struggled in his debut season at Ibrox, was handed a surprise start in Norway's final group game and delivered a moment of magic that won over even his harshest critic, Rangers legend Ally McCoist.
Aasgaard's Breakthrough Moment
Trailing 2-0, Aasgaard produced a piece of trickery on the edge of the box to deceive Bayern Munich's Michael Olise before whipping a low shot past goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The goal gave Norway a lifeline and marked a historic milestone for Rangers. The last Rangers player to score at a World Cup was Brian Laudrup for Denmark against Brazil in 1998.
Speaking on ITV commentary, McCoist, who had previously criticized Aasgaard's recruitment, was effusive in his praise. "It's beautiful body movement, he takes it away from Olise. Beautiful finish. It's beautiful body movement, and the finish is excellent," McCoist said. "It's a lovely goal, wasn't it? The defender just buys the dummy. He goes as if he is going to go left hand side, that gets him his yard."
McCoist's Change of Heart
McCoist had earlier used Aasgaard as an example of poor transfer dealings, stating: "The problem is they've spent a lot of money as well. You spend £4m on Antman. £3.5m on Aasgaard. This is the one I can't believe - you spent £4.5m on Oscar Cortes and put him out on loan. I mean, that is just unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable recruitment."
However, after Aasgaard's World Cup heroics, McCoist conceded: "Very impressive." Lead commentator Jon Champion noted Aasgaard's impressive international record: "He is early in his career, his record is impressive. Six international goals in nine international games."
Historic Achievement
Aasgaard's goal not only ended Rangers' 28-year wait for a World Cup scorer but also highlighted his potential on the global stage. Despite a tough debut campaign under Russell Martin or Danny Rohl, the Norway international earned a call-up to Stale Solbakken's World Cup squad and made the most of his opportunity.
McCoist joked about the record, saying: "He wasn't too bad either, just for the record." The goal has sparked renewed optimism among Rangers fans about Aasgaard's future at the club.
