Stokes and Atkinson Dropped for Second Test After Curfew Breach

England Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been omitted from the squad for the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge after breaking team curfew following the first Test victory. Joe Root will take over as interim captain for the match starting on 25 June.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the decision on Wednesday, stating that both players are unavailable for selection while an investigation into the incident continues. Stokes is reportedly considering his future as captain, with some suggesting he may step down permanently or even retire from international cricket. Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed Stokes to remain, calling the curfew breach 'not a sacking offence'.

The incident occurred on Sunday night after England's win at Lord's. Stokes and Atkinson continued celebrations at a Chelsea nightclub, where a fight broke out involving a security guard. Atkinson is alleged to have been involved in an altercation with a Saracens academy rugby player, though the guard required stitches. Root, who returned to the hotel before the midnight curfew, has been appointed interim captain, having previously led England in 64 Tests between 2017 and 2022.

Root's return to captaincy comes amid renewed scrutiny of England's drinking culture. The 35-year-old is seen as a safe pair of hands, having avoided alcohol-related controversy since an incident in 2013. His batting average has improved significantly since stepping down as captain, rising from 46.44 to 54.90. Vice-captain Harry Brook was not considered for the role due to his own recent nightclub incident in New Zealand.

With Stokes and Atkinson out, and Brydon Carse injured, England are likely to call up Sonny Baker and Jofra Archer for the second Test. Archer returns from IPL duty, while Baker was close to a debut at Lord's. The ECB's investigation may take several weeks, potentially affecting Stokes and Atkinson's availability for the third Test as well.
