Danni Wyatt-Hodge struck a brilliant century as England launched their Women's T20 World Cup campaign with a record-breaking 87-run victory over Sri Lanka at Edgbaston. The hosts posted 219 for one, the highest total in tournament history, before bowling out Sri Lanka for 132.
Wyatt-Hodge, who became a mother three weeks ago, scored an unbeaten 103 off 54 balls, sharing a 135-run opening stand with Amy Jones (55). Nat Sciver-Brunt added an imperious 46 not out from 22 deliveries. The total surpassed the previous record of 211 for four set by Australia against India in 2018.
Sri Lanka's chase never gained momentum after captain Chamari Athapaththu was dismissed for 14, caught by Wyatt-Hodge running back from square leg. Freya Kemp claimed a career-best four for 22 as the Sri Lankan innings folded in 19.1 overs.
Wyatt-Hodge, who cradled her bat like a baby after reaching her third T20I hundred, said: 'I've been after that third T20 hundred for a few years now, so I'm chuffed to bits to get it. I've had a big life change the last few weeks, so it was pretty emotional.'
Sri Lanka's coach Jamie Siddons lamented his team's performance: 'The bowlers didn't bowl the ball in the right areas. The ball was flying around everywhere. We're a better cricket team than that.'
