The ceremony began with Indigenous performers, followed by Alessia Cara singing amid puppet representations of native Canadian animals. After a break, flag bearers participated in the parade of nations, and Michael Bublé performed. Alanis Morissette sang the Canadian national anthem, and the ceremony concluded with a flyover by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds.

Midway through the first half, Jovo Lukic headed Bosnia and Herzegovina into the lead. Canada pushed for an equalizer, hitting the crossbar early in the second half. Just two minutes after coming on, Cyle Larin scored to level the match, sending Canadian fans into rapture.
