Katie Boulter became emotional during her post-match press conference at Wimbledon and teared up after bowing out in the first round. The British No. 2 lost 6-4 6-2 to teenage qualifier Tyra Grant in just 66 minutes on Tuesday.
Emotional Press Conference
Boulter, ranked world No. 60, had earlier said that the period around Wimbledon would be “the best month of [her] life, no matter what,” as she is set to marry her fiancé, ATP No. 6 Alex De Minaur, after the tournament. However, when asked if that still held true, she struggled to hold back tears.
“I think this is the most challenging part about tennis. It's so difficult to feel satisfied. I think it's something you keep trying to strive for, but yeah…” she replied, trailing off as the tears started to flow. “Yeah, it's tough. It's tough. I can assure you it's going to be the best day of my life in a while. Not today, yeah.”
Mixed Doubles Uncertainty
Boulter was also unsure whether she and De Minaur would team up in the mixed doubles ahead of their wedding. “I don't think I'm playing mixed, that I know of. I haven't had that conversation. He's on court. Not that I know of that I'm playing mixed doubles. I'm playing women's doubles with Heather Watson,” she said.
A Rollercoaster Grass Season
It has been a few weeks of highs and lows for Boulter on grass. She reached the semi-finals at Queen’s earlier this month, but fell at the first hurdle at Wimbledon. Despite the early exit, she remains focused on her upcoming wedding and future tournaments.
