Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has broken his silence for the first time since a tragic car accident in Nigeria left two of his close team members dead.
First Public Tribute Following the Tragedy
The British-Nigerian boxer took to Instagram on Sunday to share a heartfelt post, his first public communication since the incident. He uploaded two photographs, one of which showed him seated with his mother and three other women. In a moving detail, one of the women held a framed photograph of the late Sina Ghami.
Joshua captioned the simple yet powerful image with the words "My Brothers Keeper". The post comes after a devastating week for the fighter and his entourage.
Details of the Fatal Road Accident
The collision occurred on Monday on a major road near Lagos, Nigeria. The vehicle carrying Joshua, his driver, and his team members struck a stationary truck. Sina Ghami, Joshua's strength and conditioning coach, and Latif Ayodele, known as Latz and one of his trainers, both died in the crash.
Joshua sustained injuries and was taken to a local hospital. He was discharged on Wednesday and has since flown back to the United Kingdom. His return is understood to be ahead of the funerals for his two friends and colleagues.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Aftermath
On Friday, the Ogun state police confirmed that legal action has been initiated. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who was driving the car with Joshua as a passenger, has been charged in connection with the crash at the Sagamu magistrates court.
Joshua was in Nigeria on holiday following his decisive sixth-round knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami last December. Born in Watford to Nigerian parents, the fighter often visits the country.
The boxing world continues to send its condolences to Joshua and the families of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele as they mourn this profound loss.
