Hearn Uncertain About Joshua's Boxing Future After Tragedy

Promoter Eddie Hearn has expressed uncertainty about whether former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will decide to return to professional boxing, following a devastating car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of his close friends.

Tragic Incident in Nigeria

Anthony Joshua sustained injuries in a serious automobile accident that occurred on December 29 in Nigeria. The crash proved fatal for Joshua's close companions Sina Ghami and Latif 'Latz' Ayodele, who tragically lost their lives in the incident.

Timing of the Accident

The collision took place just weeks after Joshua's significant victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami. That win had positioned Joshua favorably for a highly anticipated 2026 showdown with his longtime rival Tyson Fury, a bout that boxing enthusiasts worldwide had been eagerly awaiting.

Hearn's Candid Assessment

In a recent interview with First Round TV, Hearn provided a frank perspective on Joshua's future in the sport. "I don't think there are any guarantees he fights again," Hearn stated, acknowledging the profound impact of the traumatic events. "But at the same time, I expect him to because boxing is something that he genuinely loves."

The promoter emphasized that Joshua must be granted all necessary time to process the emotional and physical aftermath of the crash before considering any return to competitive boxing. Hearn revealed that Joshua has been engaging in some training activities but is not yet prepared for full boxing training and won't be for some time.

Carrying Memories Forward

Hearn suggested that boxing could potentially serve as a meaningful channel for Joshua to honor his departed friends. "It is something he can carry those guys with him through as well," Hearn explained, "and it is something he wants to do."

The promoter also highlighted the physical challenges Joshua has faced, noting that many people may not fully comprehend the extent of his recovery process. "From a boxing sense, physically it wasn't easy what he went through either," Hearn added. "People probably don't realise the extent of that."

Future Plans Disrupted

Prior to the tragic incident, Joshua's career trajectory appeared clearly mapped out. "Before this terrible incident we were geared up to fight in March and then fight Tyson Fury," Hearn confirmed. "Obviously, that is not happening now and I don't know if it will ever happen right now."

However, Hearn remains cautiously optimistic about Joshua's potential return to the sport. "I think in the next few weeks and month, he may start to return and just turn the dial up a little bit more on training and see where he is at," the promoter suggested.

Joshua's Emotional Response

Last month marked Joshua's first public video appearance since the accident. In the emotional recording, the boxer indicated that he knew what his next steps would be, though he provided no specific details about his plans. The video offered a glimpse into Joshua's grieving process and his contemplation about his future both inside and outside the ring.

The boxing community continues to offer support to Joshua during this difficult period, recognizing that his decision about returning to professional competition will be deeply personal and influenced by multiple factors beyond the sport itself.
