Arturo Gatti Jr, the teenage son of legendary boxer Arturo Gatti, has died aged 17. He was found dead in Mexico on Tuesday, 16 years after his father's death.
The aspiring boxer's passing was confirmed by close friend Chuck Zito and long-time coach Moe Latif. Gatti Jr was an amateur boxer aiming to turn professional and follow in his father's footsteps. He was in Mexico with his mother, Amanda Rodrigues, according to Canadian network TVA Nouvelles.
His father, Arturo Gatti, was a two-weight world champion known for his thrilling fights. He died in Brazil in 2009 aged 37, with his death ruled a suicide. Gatti Jr was just ten months old at the time.
Tributes have poured in from the boxing community. Jean Pascal wrote: 'Sixteen years after losing his father, the world loses another Gatti... May they reunite in peace.' Jake Paul also expressed condolences, saying: 'Very sad to see a young man with so much potential lose his life.'
Gatti Jr had a close relationship with Mike Tyson, whom he called 'Uncle Mike'. The former heavyweight champion had trained the young fighter over the years.
