Olympic silver medallist Kieran Reilly has joined Team Extreme for their Half Pipe Show at the Metrocentre this weekend, thrilling crowds with his BMX skills in Gateshead.
Record-breaking rider returns home
The 25-year-old Gateshead local made history in 2022 by becoming the first person to land a 'triple flair' – three backflips with one 180° rotation. He went on to take gold at the European Championships in 2023 and silver at the Olympics in 2024.
Reilly has just returned from competing in this summer's X Games in the US, where he took home a silver medal in Alabama. He will head off on Monday to the European Championships in Germany but was determined to squeeze in the Metrocentre appearance for hometown fans.
Free shows with gravity-defying displays
Spectators can watch riders launch themselves high above the giant half pipe set up in Exhibition Square, completing tricks, flips and turns on BMX, skateboard, inline and scooter.
Metrocentre Marketing Manager Helen Atkinson said: "With Team Extreme, you always know you are in for a jaw-dropping display. Whether you know your airs and grabs from your spins or it's all new to you, come along and prepare to be impressed by back-to-back aerial tricks at a blink-and-you'll-miss-it pace. It's a must-see experience that will have the whole family talking long after the event itself."
Show times and viewing advice
The shows are free to attend, with visitors advised to arrive early to secure good viewing spots before the crowds set in. Shows on Saturday 15th are at 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm, with Sunday 16th shows at 11:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm and 4pm.
