Katie Boulter produced the finest performance of her career on Friday, battling past world No. 2 and Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 at the Queen's Club. The British No. 3's victory marked the biggest win of her life and the highest-ranked opponent any British player has defeated since Johanna Konta upset Simona Halep in 2017.
Boulter's Grit and Determination
Boulter, who had earlier defeated Jaqueline Cristian 6-1, 6-3, showed immense resilience against Rybakina. After a tight first set, Boulter seized the momentum at 5-5, breaking Rybakina's serve as the Kazakh faltered with unforced errors. She then served out to take the set 7-5. Rybakina dominated the second set 6-2, but Boulter regrouped in the third, improving her serving and playing boldly to clinch the match.
“Honestly, I’m not really sure what to say, but I really feel like this win definitely goes towards the crowd that got me through it tonight,” Boulter said. “The atmosphere was absolutely incredible. I just tried to tell myself to keep backing myself and go for it. I’m standing here a winner, and it’s because I trusted my game.”
Raducanu Shines Against Cirstea
Earlier on Friday, Emma Raducanu delivered her best performance of the season, defeating seventh seed Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-2. The win was Raducanu's first against a top-20 opponent in over a year, as Cirstea is ranked world No. 18. Raducanu's quarter-final match against Kamilla Rakhimova was postponed due to rain delays, meaning the winner will have to play two matches on Saturday.
Challenges Ahead
The winner of Raducanu's match will face 18-year-old sixth seed Iva Jovic, who secured her first top-five win by defeating Amanda Anisimova. Despite the scheduling challenges, Raducanu remained upbeat, watching Boulter's final set with a relaxed demeanor.
Boulter's victory was particularly impressive given Rybakina's dominance on serve early in the match. The Kazakh had conceded just four points on her serve in the first five games, but Boulter's persistence paid off. “If you don’t go for it, then you’re going to regret the things that you’ve worked so hard for,” Boulter added.
The rain-affected schedule meant a packed Friday, with all second-round victors playing twice. By the time Boulter and Rybakina took the court at 5:41 PM, it was clear that not all matches would be completed. Saturday promises to be challenging, but both Boulter and Raducanu have shown they are ready for the test.
