Georgia Hunter-Bell won the European 800m title in Birmingham, holding off a strong field that included Keely Hodgkinson, Audrey Werro, Nia Broeders and Femke Bol.
Race Decided in Final Stride
The 25-year-old Briton timed her finish to perfection, overtaking Hodgkinson in the closing metres to secure victory in a season’s best of 1:58.42. Hodgkinson took silver, while Werro finished third.
Broeders and Bol, both known for their 400m prowess, finished fourth and fifth respectively, unable to match the pace over two laps.
Home Crowd Delight
The win was celebrated by a vocal home crowd at the Alexander Stadium, with Hunter-Bell dedicating the gold to her late coach, who passed away earlier this year.
“This is for him,” she said. “He believed in me when I didn’t.”
Hunter-Bell’s victory adds to Britain’s medal tally at the championships, which continue through the weekend.
