The Hero Dubai Desert Classic has introduced sleep pods as part of a new Mental Health and Fitness Zone at Emirates Golf Club, allowing players to nap before, during, and after events. The facility, which includes sleeping chambers, mind puzzles, and virtual reality relaxation, is designed to aid recovery and mental well-being.
Dr Andrew Murray, Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of the tournament, said the pods are available for players, caddies, wives, and essential staff. He noted that sleep was a key focus during the Ryder Cup and that the pods help golfers arriving from different time zones. NASA research suggests 26 minutes is optimal for a power nap, but Murray advises naps of 20-30 minutes, with longer naps allowed before 2pm.
Scottish golfer Richie Ramsay is a notable fan of the pods, described as “notoriously difficult to dislodge.” The zone also offers one-on-one mental health consultations and a virtual reality experience previously used to prepare European Ryder Cup players for crowd noise at Bethpage Black.
The initiative follows the suicide of American pro golfer Grayson Murray in May 2024, highlighting the importance of mental health support. Dubai-based Tommy Fleetwood welcomed the facility, saying mental wellness is crucial in sport and life, and that such proactive measures should be adopted at more Tour events.
