Boxer Zolani Tete shot dead aged 38 in ambush

Two-time boxing world champion Zolani Tete has been killed at the age of 38. The former titleholder was shot dead in an ambush in Eastern Cape, a province in the south east of South Africa.

Champion's career and titles

Tete was known for holding the WBF Flyweight and WBO Bantamweight world titles. He had been expected to return to the ring, having been absent since testing positive for the steroid stanozolol.

His last fight was a victory over British boxer Jason Cunningham at Wembley Arena in July 2022. Reports from his native South Africa broke the news of his death.

Police confirmation

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed the former boxer's death and stated that a shooting incident had occurred at around 6.30pm local time.
