An 18-year-old has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Derwent at Darley Abbey, Derbyshire. Five fire engines and three water rescue units were dispatched shortly after 12:46 PM on Friday, July 10, 2026, following a 999 call reporting two teenagers in distress in the water.
Rescue Operation and Recovery
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that two individuals had got into difficulty while swimming. A younger teenager was pulled from the water shortly before 4:30 PM. However, the 18-year-old's body was recovered shortly after 8 PM, as confirmed by Derby City Council. Police officers are now offering support to the man's family.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service dispatched crews from Kingsway, Nottingham Road, Buxton and Belper, who were joined by personnel from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service's Highfields fire station. A spokesman said: "Firefighters were called to reports of two people in difficulty in the water after a 999 call was received by our control room at 12:46 hours today. Five fire engines and three water rescue units are at the scene, including crews from Kingsway, Nottingham Road, Buxton and Belper. They are joined by firefighters from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service's Highfields station. Derbyshire Constabulary and East Midlands Ambulance Service are also in attendance."
Location and Recent Incidents
The two teenagers are understood to have been swimming in the weir near the Darley Abbey Mills complex. The incident comes just weeks after a man in his 30s needed urgent medical treatment after getting into difficulty in water near Darley Street. That man was pulled from the River Derwent before being transported to hospital.
