Manchester United are plotting a summer move for West Ham's El Hadji Malick Diouf, but only if sufficient funds remain after their midfield overhaul. The 21-year-old Senegalese defender has impressed in his debut Premier League season despite the Hammers' relegation battle.
United's Summer Plans Take Shape
The Red Devils are on the verge of securing Champions League football for next season, sitting just one point away from qualification. This financial boost will aid their squad refresh, with manager Michael Carrick's future also under consideration. While midfield remains the top priority—with at least two new signings expected—other positions are being assessed.
Left-Side Options
Carrick has hinted at signing a left winger after shifting away from the back three system used by predecessor Ruben Amorim. However, United may opt for a left-back instead, with Diouf on their radar. Patrick Dorgu's ability to play further forward could allow Diouf to compete with Luke Shaw for the left-back spot.
According to The Guardian, United are among several clubs monitoring Diouf, who cost West Ham £19 million last summer. The east London club may be reluctant to sell their standout performer, but United's interest could test their resolve.
Midfield Priority
Casemiro is expected to depart, freeing up funds for targets like Sandro Tonali, Elliot Anderson, and Carlos Baleba. Any move for Diouf would depend on the budget remaining after these midfield acquisitions. Champions League qualification will also necessitate greater squad depth for the additional European fixtures.
United's hierarchy is aware of the need to strengthen across the squad, with the left side a particular focus. Whether they pursue a winger or a left-back like Diouf will become clearer as the summer window approaches.
