Thomas Tuchel has revealed he held clear-the-air talks with Ivan Toney and has now put the striker on “special operations” duty for England’s World Cup squad. Tuchel admitted Toney’s “commitment and level of training” was not good enough during the last England camp 12 months ago, but after further discussions, he has been recalled for the tournament in the United States.
Toney, 30, who now plays in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Ahli, is one of the most surprising inclusions in the 26-man squad. Tuchel believes he can be England’s super sub, particularly valuable as a penalty specialist in shootouts and as a physical presence in the box. “Ivan is, in this case, a part of a specialty team, as part of a special operations team,” Tuchel said.
The England manager explained that he was initially unhappy with Toney’s performance in the June camp, but after receiving positive feedback from his club coach and from the Euros in Germany, he decided to reopen the door. “We had to clear the air after that. That was the first step to even start thinking about calling him up again,” Tuchel added.
Toney’s inclusion means England have three strikers in the squad, alongside Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins. Tuchel praised Watkins’ response to being left out in March, but noted Toney’s comeback is even more remarkable. “Harry loves to play with him, because he thinks that he takes the attention off him,” Tuchel said.
Another surprise name is Djed Spence, who has struggled for game time at Tottenham this season and recently broke his jaw. Tuchel said Spence brings a unique profile to the squad, being the fastest player and capable of playing both full-back positions. “He brings something to the group that we don't have in his profile,” Tuchel explained.
