The controversial post, which has since been deleted, featured a video with the caption 'Sigues conmigo, Hispanos!' – a grammatically incorrect and awkwardly phrased Spanish attempt to say 'You're still with me, Hispanics!'. The clumsy phrasing, which more accurately translates to 'You continue with me, Hispanics!', was immediately mocked and denounced by native speakers and political commentators alike.
A 'Cynical and Insulting' Ploy
Community leaders were swift to condemn the move. Jay Rodriguez, a prominent Republican commentator and executive director of the Associated Hispanic Chambers of Commerce, did not mince words. He labelled the attempt 'racist and culturally offensive', accusing the Trump campaign of a transparently cynical ploy to win over a demographic it has consistently failed to understand or respect.
'This isn't an outreach effort; it's a caricature,' Rodriguez stated. 'It demonstrates a profound disrespect, reducing an entire diverse community to a political prop to be manipulated with broken Spanish and empty slogans.'

Throughout his political career, Trump has repeatedly made derogatory comments about immigrants and Hispanic people, from famously characterising Mexican immigrants as 'rapists' and 'criminals' at the launch of his 2016 campaign to more recent inflammatory rhetoric.
This latest episode has reinforced the perception among many that his attempts to court Hispanic voters are entirely disingenuous.
