US House Speaker Mike Johnson presented former President Donald Trump with a newly concocted 'America First' award on Wednesday evening, during a National Republican Congressional Committee fundraiser. The award, symbolised by a golden eagle statue, was granted amid a backdrop of global chaos, including an aggressive war in Iran, heightened pressure on Cuba, immigration enforcement operations, and a partial government shutdown.
Johnson's Justification for the Award
In his remarks, Johnson stated, "The president has done so much for the American people and we want to honor him, in some small way, some token of our appreciation for his leadership. So, tonight, we have created a new award." He introduced the 'America First' award, describing it as "this beautiful golden statue here – appropriate for the new golden era in America." Johnson further announced that the award would be given annually moving forward.
Criticism and Ridicule from Democrats and Commentators
The presentation of the award has sparked significant criticism and ridicule. Jen Psaki, former White House press secretary and host of a show on MSNBC, commented, "Little Mike Johnson and all those Republicans have just created yet another participation trophy to give their very special boy in the White House to make sure he feels good about himself." She added, "Any other adult in this country would feel completely embarrassed by the patronizing way that Trump is showered with fake awards on a near-daily basis. That’s just how Republicans have to treat this president."
Lawmakers also joined in the mockery. US Representative Kathy Castor from Florida labelled the award "out of touch," highlighting the partial government shutdown that has left Transportation Security Administration agents without pay. US Representative Seth Magaziner from Rhode Island called it "so embarrassing for everyone involved," while California Representative Nanette D Barragán criticised Johnson, urging him to focus on his duties and "stop kissing a$$."
Context of Global and Domestic Crises
The award ceremony occurred against a tumultuous global landscape. The US and Israel are engaged in aggressive military strikes in Iran, and a tightening oil blockade on Cuba has resulted in severe shortages of food, fuel, and medicine. Domestically, the partial government shutdown, stemming from disagreements over immigration enforcement tactics, has caused TSA employees to miss paychecks, leading to extremely long lines and wait times at airports as immigration officials are redirected to work there.
History of Similar Awards for Trump
This 'America First' award follows a pattern of other manufactured accolades given to Trump. Last month, mining executives at the White House awarded him the 'Undisputed Champion of Beautiful, Clean Coal' award. In December, he received a fabricated FIFA peace prize for promoting "peace and unity" globally. Additionally, in October, Nobel Peace Prize recipient María Corina Machado, a right-wing Venezuelan opposition leader, dedicated her prize to Trump.
The creation of this award has intensified debates over political priorities, with critics arguing that such gestures are frivolous and out of touch with pressing national and international issues. As global tensions rise and domestic challenges persist, the focus on symbolic awards continues to draw sharp rebuke from across the political spectrum.
