Rodri Issues Man City Future Update After FA Cup Final

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has insisted that he is not preoccupied with his future, despite entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. The 29-year-old Spaniard, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, recently helped City secure a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final, lifting his 14th trophy with the club.

Rodri's Contract Situation

Rodri, who has just 12 months remaining on his current deal, has not ruled out a departure this summer, following teammates Bernardo Silva and John Stones who have also been linked with exits. City manager Pep Guardiola previously stated he would not stand in the midfielder's way if he wished to leave.

However, City would prefer to retain the 29-year-old, who recently returned from a month-long injury layoff. He played 60 minutes in the FA Cup final, contributing to the victory.

Rodri's Comments on His Future

In a post-match interview, Rodri expressed calmness regarding his future. "I'm calm," he said. "As I said a while ago, I'm only thinking about my club, about finishing the season with as many titles as possible. We have the chance to win the Premier League and then the World Cup. Right now, I'm not thinking much about my future. I'll be honest with you because there's another priority."

In March, Rodri made headlines by stating that his previous allegiance to Atletico Madrid would not prevent him from joining bitter rivals Real Madrid. "There have been many players who've gone down that path [playing for Atletico and Real]," he explained. "Not immediately, but over time. For me, you can't turn down the best clubs in the world."

Injury Comeback

Rodri missed much of last season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in September 2024. Multiple setbacks limited him to just 36 appearances this term, but he is hopeful his fitness troubles are behind him.

"I'm very happy to be back," the Spain international added. "It's been a bit of a rollercoaster ride, because I didn't have a very serious injury, but choosing the right moment to return wasn't easy because I kept trying and having doubts. Today I also had doubts before the match started, but it ended very well and these 65 minutes are very good for my body. The recent injury was just a small thing, although you always have the fear that it might become something bigger. Today I was able to pass the test, so to speak; I felt relatively well. Obviously, I was still missing that 20 per cent, but it's a matter of weeks."
