Marcus Rashford is set to begin England's World Cup campaign against Croatia on 17 June in Dallas, but his club future remains unresolved. The forward, who has been on loan at Barcelona, faces an uncertain summer as his permanent transfer to the Catalan club is far from guaranteed.
Rashford has enjoyed a successful spell under Hansi Flick at Barcelona, scoring a crucial free-kick against Real Madrid that helped secure La Liga. He has expressed a desire to stay, saying: 'I am not a magician but if I was, I would stay. We will see.' However, Barcelona's interest is unclear, especially after the £69m arrival of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle, who also plays on the left side of attack.
Manchester United are demanding a £26m permanent fee for Rashford, whose contract runs until May 2028. However, his £17.5m annual salary complicates matters, as United are keen to offload the wage burden. Barcelona appear reluctant to make the move permanent, and a second loan would require the club to cover most of the salary.
Rashford's return to United seems unlikely, despite the departure of former head coach Ruben Amorim and the appointment of Michael Carrick. He remains out of favour with minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and senior management. Other potential destinations include Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid, though each presents obstacles.
The transfer window opens on 15 June, but Rashford's future may take time to resolve due to the complexities of his situation, the World Cup, and differing agendas. United could block any deal they deem unfavourable, while Rashford can also refuse moves he does not want. He remains an enigma, with eight goals and nine assists in La Liga this season.
