Dango Ouattara's dramatic late equaliser snatched a 2-2 draw for Brentford against Crystal Palace, keeping their European dream alive. The Bees remain in contention for a first-ever European campaign after a thrilling encounter at the Gtech Stadium.
First Half: Palace Dominate but Brentford Strike Lucky
Crystal Palace started brightly, with Ismaila Sarr converting a penalty after just six minutes. Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher brought down Sarr, and referee Sam Barrott awarded the spot-kick after a VAR review. Sarr slotted home his eighth Premier League goal of the season.
Brentford were uncharacteristically flat, and Kelleher had to be alert to save from Daniel Munoz. Wharton sent a volley over the bar, prompting chants from the away end. Palace twice hit the woodwork—first through Sarr, who struck the near post after a pass from Yeremy Pino, and then Jorgen Strand Larsen, whose shot curled against the far post.
Against the run of play, Brentford equalised in the 40th minute. Yehor Yarmoliuk's cross was headed by Palace defender Jaydee Canvot, but the ball struck Ouattara in the face and looped over goalkeeper Dean Henderson into the net—the luckiest goal of the season.
Second Half: Wharton Opens Account, Ouattara Strikes Again
Palace regained the lead seven minutes after the break. Munoz fed Adam Wharton on the edge of the box, and the midfielder shifted the ball onto his left foot before firing a low shot that Kelleher appeared to dive over. It was Wharton's first Premier League goal after 93 appearances for the Eagles, and he celebrated with a double somersault in front of the travelling fans.
Brentford pushed for an equaliser and got their reward in the 88th minute. Michael Kayode's long throw was flicked on by Sepp Van Den Berg, and Ouattara, who was tireless throughout, dispatched the ball into the net to secure a point.
Implications for European Qualification
The draw keeps Brentford in the hunt for a European place, while Palace may have one eye on their upcoming Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano in 10 days. Despite the result, both teams showed commitment to their domestic duties.
