In a lively New York City mayoral debate, candidates Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani sparred over issues ranging from rent prices to police reform. The debate, which also touched on Donald Trump and the war in Gaza, eventually turned to local concerns such as grocery costs, public safety, and housing.
Mamdani clarified that he no longer supports defunding the police, instead promoting a plan to have officers avoid responding to mental health crises. Cuomo defended the NYPD, stating that officers are not racists or anti-queer and do not pose a threat to public safety. Curtis Sliwa countered Cuomo by alleging that the former governor was responsible for the release of 43 individuals convicted of killing police officers, a claim referencing recent parole board decisions.
On grocery costs, all three candidates said they spend between $120 and $175 per week. The discussion then shifted to rent prices, with Cuomo criticising Mamdani for living in a rent-stabilised apartment costing $2,300 per month, arguing it should go to a lower-income tenant. Mamdani responded by outlining his housing plan, which includes freezing rent for millions of rent-stabilised residents and boosting construction. Cuomo proposed 'Zohran’s law', requiring many renters to spend at least 30% of their income on rent.
The debate also covered broader political developments, including President Trump’s plans to meet Vladimir Putin and federal charges against former National Security Advisor John Bolton for retaining classified documents. However, the focus remained on New York City-specific issues as candidates sought to differentiate themselves ahead of the election.
