Welsh Secretary Stephen Kinnock condemned an audience member's "disgraceful personal slur" during Thursday's BBC Question Time, broadcast from Brecon.
Exchange over EU membership
Presented by Fiona Bruce, the programme featured a panel including Mr Kinnock, Conservative shadow Welsh secretary Mims Davies, Delyth Jewell, Reform shadow health minister James Evans, and George Monbiot. During the first debate topic, 'Is it time to talk about re-joining the EU?', an audience member addressed Mr Kinnock directly.
She said: "I feel tonight we've heard Stephen Kinnock talk about wanting to go back into the EU, and I think that represents everything I hated about the EU. It is a corrupt old boys' network and Stephen Kinnock's family have done well out of the EU."
Kinnock's response
Mr Kinnock replied: "A lady in the audience made what I found to be a disgraceful personal slur. My father (the former Labour leader Neil Kinnock) is a patriot who has dedicated his life to public service and has always stood up for what he believes in and what he believes to be best for this country."
He added: "You may disagree with his view but I think it is frankly disgraceful that you made that personal attack on him. In terms of your point of view on Brexit and what has been said on rehashing the argument, I think the key part is when we had the debate in 2016, it was all about speculation because the 'leave' side never really set out what the plan was for leaving or what it was going to mean for our economy."
