As the UK braces for another scorching summer, the government has announced a groundbreaking initiative to provide free air conditioning to vulnerable households. The scheme aims to protect the elderly, disabled, and low-income families from the dangers of extreme heat.
Who Qualifies for Free Air Conditioning?
Under the new plan, eligible households will receive free installation and maintenance of air conditioning units. Priority will be given to:
- Elderly individuals over 75
- People with disabilities or chronic health conditions
- Low-income families with children under 5
How Will the Scheme Work?
The government has partnered with energy providers to roll out the programme. Households that meet the criteria can apply online or via a dedicated hotline. Successful applicants will have units installed before the peak summer months.
Energy Minister Claire Coutinho stated: "This is about saving lives and reducing pressure on our NHS during heatwaves. We've seen the devastating impact of extreme temperatures, and this scheme will help those most at risk."
Addressing Climate Change Concerns
Environmental groups have raised concerns about the energy consumption of additional air conditioning units. The government has promised that all installed systems will be energy-efficient models, and renewable energy sources will be prioritised where possible.
The scheme is expected to cost £50 million in its first year, with funding coming from the existing energy support budget.
