Nigel Farage has said he is “quite shocked” by Donald Trump’s threat that Iranian “civilisation will die”, calling the remarks “over the top in every single way”. The Reform UK leader, a longstanding supporter of the US president, made the comments during a walkabout in Bedworth after being told of Trump’s latest Truth Social post.
Farage acknowledged Trump’s desire to use threats to bring Iran to the negotiating table but said the language used was “way too far”. Asked if such a post was befitting of a US president, Farage described Trump as “an upset, angry American president” but drew a comparison to Winston Churchill’s rhetoric during the bombing of Germany in the Second World War.
The remarks come as Downing Street faces pressure to restrict US use of British military bases following Trump’s threats to attack Iranian power stations and bridges. The Liberal Democrats and Greens have called for a halt to such operations, while No 10 insists that only missions with a “defensive” purpose are permitted from UK soil.
Labour MP Apsana Begum urged the government to withdraw access to military bases, warning that Trump’s “reckless” language threatens civilians and could drag the UK into a wider conflict. Downing Street has so far declined to directly criticise the president, in line with Keir Starmer’s policy of ignoring Trump’s provocations.
