Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Signs Bill to Rename Airport After Donald Trump
Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, has officially signed a bill to rename Palm Beach International Airport after former President Donald J. Trump. This move, if approved, would see the airport's name changed to President Donald J. Trump International Airport, with the change scheduled to take effect on July 1st. The legislation marks the latest in a series of buildings, institutions, and programs being named in honor of Trump across the United States.
Trump's Expanding Legacy: From Warships to Airports
Donald Trump's name is increasingly appearing on various public and private entities. In addition to the airport, his legacy includes a planned class of Navy warships, a visa program for wealthy foreigners, a government-run prescription drug website, and federal savings accounts for children. Notably, the U.S. Treasury announced that U.S. paper currency will bear Trump's signature starting this summer, a first for a sitting president.
Trump's family business filed a trademark application for the airport name in February, indicating a strategic effort to secure the branding. Before the name change can be implemented, a formal request must be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration. This process involves updating flight charting and navigation databases, as well as altering airport signs.
Presidential Library and Other Tributes
DeSantis has also been instrumental in securing a parcel of land in Miami for Trump's presidential library. On Truth Social, Trump recently posted a video showcasing a rendering of the library, designed by the Miami-based firm Bermello Ajamil. The video depicts an enormous mirrored skyscraper adorned with Trump's name and the American flag, featuring a presidential jet in the lobby, a gold escalator reminiscent of his 2015 campaign launch, a replica Oval Office, rooftop gardens, and a large gold statue of Trump.
The library's website, which is currently in a "coming soon" phase, includes a link for donations. The White House has not yet commented on these plans. Trump, originally from New York, moved to Florida in 2019 and now primarily resides at his Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach.
Legislative and Symbolic Moves
In a related development, Representative Brian Mast introduced legislation last week to change the airport's three-letter code from PBI to DJT, reflecting Trump's initials. This symbolic gesture underscores the broader trend of honoring Trump through official channels.
Other instances of Trump's name being affixed to institutions include the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where Trump's allies added his name during a board takeover in December. Similarly, the United States Institute of Peace building in Washington was renamed after Trump months after his administration seized the non-profit organization.
Earlier this month, a federal arts panel appointed by Trump approved a commemorative gold coin featuring his image, part of a series planned by the U.S. Mint to celebrate the nation's 250th birthday. In February, the White House confirmed that Trump proposed dropping his hold on funding for a New York Hudson River tunnel project in exchange for Democratic support to rename Washington Dulles Airport and New York Penn Station after him.
These actions highlight a concerted effort to embed Trump's name into the fabric of American public life, from transportation hubs to cultural institutions, as his political influence continues to shape policy and legacy discussions.
