De Zerbi: Gallagher's Form Like Having Extra Player

Roberto De Zerbi has lavished praise on Conor Gallagher, stating that the midfielder's current form makes it feel as though Tottenham are playing with an extra man on the pitch. The 26-year-old produced a standout display in Sunday's crucial 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, a result that lifted Spurs out of the Premier League's relegation zone.

Gallagher's Impact on the Pitch

Gallagher opened the scoring for Tottenham with his first goal for the club, but it was his relentless work rate and all-around contribution that truly impressed his manager. De Zerbi highlighted the England international's ability to cover every blade of grass, fulfilling multiple roles throughout the match.

“When Gallagher plays like this we play with 12 players because you can find him as a striker, as a midfielder, as a full-back, everywhere on the pitch you can find him,” De Zerbi said. “Great player, great passion, great qualities. Great player.”

The loanee from Atletico Madrid has faced a challenging period since his arrival in north London, but Sunday's performance marked a significant turning point. Gallagher admitted that the recent months have been difficult but expressed his delight at contributing to the team's much-needed victory.

“It has been a difficult few months for me, for the whole club and this is what I do best, work hard off the ball,” Gallagher told Spurs TV. “I am a team player, I try and do what I do best and the fans were able to see that. I’ll keep doing that the best I can to make the club proud, to help Tottenham keep playing like that and get more wins.”

Regarding his first goal for the club, Gallagher added: “If I am being honest, normally when you score your first goal for the club there is a relief for yourself, but there was none of that, I was so focused on going again and continuing to play well, knowing how important the three points were. I am so happy and so proud.”

Aston Villa's Struggles Continue

While Tottenham celebrated a vital win, Aston Villa endured a dismal afternoon, suffering a third consecutive defeat across all competitions. Manager Unai Emery made seven changes to his starting lineup, prioritising Thursday's Europa League semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest. The decision backfired as Villa produced a lacklustre display that drew boos from their own supporters.

Emery, however, remained defiant in his approach. “I am here for more than three years, and how we have done everything, I don’t forget it,” he said. “We spoke in the dressing room after the first half about it. How we are getting it, during the process we have been on here, and how we want to continue in the way. We can perform better or worse, but overall how we are we analyse the process and how we did it. I am not losing my mind and my point of view about how I want to get it. We lost today because Tottenham performed better than us. They are a very good team. For different circumstances they are not fighting where we are, but we must be realistic about everything.”

The victory for Tottenham, secured by goals from Gallagher and Richarlison, moves them out of the bottom three and provides a much-needed boost as they look to climb the Premier League table.
