Prince Andrew has launched a legal challenge against Thames Valley Police and the Central Criminal Court following his arrest in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The move has created further, unneeded trouble for the Crown, which is already dealing with the return of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the UK and the fallout from Earl Spencer's book about Princess Diana.
Allegations and denial
It is alleged that Andrew shared sensitive information with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein during his time as the UK's trade envoy. Andrew denies all wrongdoing and has not been charged. His arrest in February was described as historic — the first event of its kind since the 1640s.
The image of him in the back of a car leaving a police station has been called one of the most iconic photographs of its time. His detention was a hammer blow for the royal family, and the King issued a speedy statement saying: "What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course."
A thorn in the King's side
Andrew has been a source of negative news stories since his relationship with Epstein was laid bare, including his 2019 Newsnight interview and accusations made by Virginia Giuffre. He has proven to be a massive thorn in the side of King Charles since his reign began in 2022.
Charles has had to make clear to his younger brother that he must not use the King's money to fund his challenge of the search warrants that led to his detention. The former Duke of York leads a reclusive life on the King's Sandringham estate.
Impact on the Crown
Charles has refused to throw his brother to the wolves when so many others would have done, and this is the thanks he gets. If he does eventually let Andrew fend for himself, the money would likely run dry quickly. Perhaps then Andrew might show the tiniest grain of humility.
