The owner of a chip shop in south London has vowed to keep a mural of a fish waving a Union Jack flag on his wall, despite a council order to remove it.
Chris Kanizi, who runs the Golden Chippy in Greenwich, said he is taking legal advice about appealing the notice from the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The council stated that the advert was painted without permission in a conservation area near a World Heritage Site.
Mr Kanizi explained that he commissioned the mural after being refused permission to keep an earlier 18-foot hoarding depicting the same patriotic fish scene above his shop door. He insisted he would continue to fight to keep the artwork.
The council dismissed suggestions that the objection was due to the Union Jack, calling such claims 'disingenuous and untrue'. It said it was acting in accordance with government planning laws, as it would with any unauthorised advert.
