Ukrainian authorities have named President Volodymyr Zelensky's former chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, as a suspect in a major corruption investigation, a development that is likely to increase pressure on the presidential office during a critical phase of the war with Russia.
Corruption Probe Shakes Kyiv
The investigation, which has already rocked Ukraine's political establishment, fueled public anger and led to Yermak's resignation last year. Yermak was widely regarded as the second most powerful figure in the country after Zelensky, wielding significant influence despite holding an unelected position.
Ukraine's anti-corruption agencies stated that Yermak is suspected of being part of a criminal group that laundered approximately $10.5 million through an elite housing development on the outskirts of Kyiv. In line with Ukrainian law, the agencies did not name Yermak directly, but local media widely identified him.
Yermak's Denial and Broader Context
Speaking to Ukrainian outlet Radio Liberty, Yermak denied owning any real estate in the development but provided no further comment. The case is part of a larger probe into high-level corruption that first emerged in November, when a former business partner of Zelensky was accused of running a $100 million kickback scheme at the state atomic agency. A former deputy prime minister and close associate of Zelensky was also charged in connection with that investigation.
Dmytro Lytvyn, Zelensky's communications adviser, told reporters it was too early to comment on the suspicions against Yermak, as procedural actions are still ongoing.
Yermak's Role and Influence
Yermak, a former film producer and entertainment lawyer, frequently appeared alongside Zelensky at public events and served as Kyiv's lead negotiator in U.S.-backed peace talks with Russia. His resignation last year was part of a broader government reshuffle aimed at restoring trust in the presidential office, which has faced allegations of centralized power.
