American bare-knuckle boxer Paulie Malignaggi has launched a scathing attack on NHS doctors, labelling them "inept animals" after suffering complications from post-fight surgery. The former world champion boxer claimed that medical staff at a Leeds hospital failed to properly clean his wounds following his bout in October 2025, resulting in persistent infections.
Allegations of Poor Care
Malignaggi, known for his outspoken nature, did not hold back in his criticism. He asserted that some NHS personnel would not even be permitted to work with farm animals in the United States, let alone treat human patients in a hospital setting. The boxer expressed frustration over what he perceived as a lack of basic hygiene and medical competence.
Hospital Response
A spokesperson for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust responded to the allegations, apologising for the wait Malignaggi experienced in their Emergency Department. The Trust explained that patients are prioritised based on clinical need, which may have contributed to the delay. They invited Malignaggi to contact them directly to discuss his complaint further and address any concerns about his treatment.
The incident has sparked debate about the pressures facing the NHS and the standards of care provided, particularly in busy emergency departments. While the Trust has expressed willingness to investigate the matter, Malignaggi's strong language has drawn both support and criticism from the public and medical professionals alike.
