UK information commissioner steps aside amid investigation

The UK information commissioner, John Edwards, has stepped back from his role after the data protection regulator initiated an independent workplace investigation into unspecified HR matters. Edwards, who serves as the national watchdog for information rights, data privacy, and transparency among public bodies, announced his full cooperation with the inquiry in a LinkedIn post.

Investigation details

No specifics about the subject of the investigation have been disclosed, but it is understood to have been ongoing for approximately two months. Edwards voluntarily stepped aside on 26 February, according to a spokesperson for the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Just days earlier, he had represented the regulator at an AI summit in Delhi, attended by senior politicians and global tech leaders.

Edwards was appointed to the £200,000-a-year position in January 2022. The ICO oversees a broad range of activities, from political parties' use of personal data in campaigning to age verification on websites to protect children. Edwards is an information law specialist who previously served as New Zealand's privacy commissioner.

Recent ICO actions

In February, the ICO fined Reddit £14.5 million for failing to implement robust age checks for children. That same month, it launched an investigation into Elon Musk's Grok AI after reports that it had been used to generate non-consensual sexual imagery of individuals, including women and children. The ICO also regulates personal data use by campaigning political parties, AI systems in job selection, police use of facial recognition technology, and nuisance calls.

The ICO stated that Edwards' decision to step back was to enable the independent investigation, which will produce a report with recommendations for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to decide next steps. The ICO added, "To protect all parties involved and maintain the integrity of the investigation, we are unable to provide further details at this stage. The board, chief executive Paul Arnold and the executive team continue to lead the ICO... to ensure continuity in our leadership and regulatory work."

In his LinkedIn message, Edwards wrote: "I wanted to let you know that for the last few weeks I have voluntarily stepped aside from my duties at the ICO while an independent investigation into HR matters is undertaken. I am fully cooperating and engaged with the investigation and will report progress in due course."
